Beckford Women’s Institute
2018 was another great year with a wide range of speakers and wonderful days out.
We began the year with a “Valentines Supper” – a lovely demonstration of a romantic 3 course dinner with a sumptuous chocolate surprise dessert. We met Edwin Alvis who demonstrated his wonderful metal garden sculptures before a tricky Garden Quiz in May. We learnt a little of the “Archaeology and History of Bredon Hill” together with “Richard III – the legend, history & bones”. June gave us an insight into the work of the Evesham Street Preachers, whilst October brought us Morris Dancing! We held a craft taster day in February making bags, cards, a fabric flower corsage, decorative tassels and clay buttons – October brought Christmas crafts and flower arranging at the November AGM.
Members visited the Midlands Air Ambulance, The Confetti Fields and Concorde; went on monthly walks, played scrabble and discussed a wide variety of books through the Bookworm Group. We held our Annual Garden Party on a lovely warm July evening, hosted the Tewkesbury Group Carol Concert at St John the Baptist Church and had fun at the Christmas Party where Vale Connection entertained us after quizzes and games. We heard Michael Portillo and Adam Henson at Group events and spent our time knitting blankets and cardigans for Gloucester Royal’s Premature Baby Unit.
2019 looks to be no less exciting with new speakers, a charity sewing project and not least the Gloucestershire Federation’s Centenary with a Vintage Fair in July and October exhibition at Gloucester Cathedral.
Not forgetting a time to meet friends, chat and share a cup of tea with the WI’s famous homemade cakes and biscuits!
