Beckford Women’s Institute
Beckford WI has around 30 members who usually meet once a month in Beckford Village Hall, on the second Monday of the month. Our activities range from crafts to walks, talks and trips and discussions on topical issues. We also love quizzes and get involved in village events.
The theme in 2019 seemed to be “Journeys” and the talks ranged from actual travel journeys such as Viv Ebbage’s ill-fated cruise on the Costa Concordia, and the trips across the world by the SS Great Britain, to more local journeys which left their mark, in the pathways of Gloucestershire. Other journeys were more of life journeys such as Chris Evans setting up the Butterfly Garden or the inspiring journeys made by Sue Brown, a military pilot, who paved the way for others to follow and Jacky Robinson who provided support for women suffering from the after-effects of mastectomy and helped them make difficult decisions. Beckford WI members followed up these talks by visiting the SS Great Britain and the Butterfly Garden.
We also joined in enthusiastically in the Gloucestershire Federation 100 Years Celebrations by displaying a table of what our WI means to us, in the cloisters of Gloucestershire Cathedral. We also painted a Treasure Map for a fund-raising stall in the grounds of Lady Bathurst’s garden in Cirencester. It was all good fun and drew upon the artistic abilities and talents of many members. Crafts included making driver bags for hospital patients and Christmas decorations.
Our new programme for 2020 has plenty of variety, guaranteed to spark interest. If you would like to come along you can be assured of a warm welcome.
Make new friends and join in the fun!
